The County Handicap Hurdle is one of the most beloved and most frenetic races of the entire Cheltenham Festival — a two-mile sprint handicap over hurdles that has been producing dramatic, tight finishes and big-priced winners since 1834. It is one of the oldest races in the Festival programme and retains all the raw excitement that sprint handicap racing delivers.
Run over two miles and one furlong on the Old Course, the County Hurdle is a race of pace, positioning and nerve. With fields regularly exceeding 20 runners, the race begins at extraordinary speed as jockeys compete for favourable positions in a fast-moving, tightly bunched cavalcade. The challenge is to maintain contact with the pace throughout the race while preserving enough energy for the brutal final climb up the Cheltenham hill to the winning post.
The County Hurdle is notoriously difficult to predict with any precision. The combination of a large field, a fast pace and a demanding finish creates the ideal conditions for traffic problems, unlucky passages and late-charging outsiders who deliver massive returns for those who backed them. A horse that receives a dream passage through the field can win from even a seemingly impossible position at the top of the straight — and a race where anything can happen delivers exactly the value bets that experienced punters dream of finding.
The handicap nature of the County Hurdle theoretically gives every runner an equal chance on the weights. In practice, horses who can travel at speed, jump cleanly and maintain their momentum throughout the race are those who most often deliver the big-priced winners that make the County Hurdle one of the most rewarding races on the Festival card for the knowledgeable punter.
The County Hurdle is run at a fast pace from the outset. Horses who can travel comfortably in the front half of the field and maintain their position throughout the race are ideally placed — backmarkers who need the leader to come back to them are at a disadvantage in this race.
Horses who ran well at the Festival in the previous year — even in defeat — carry a significant advantage in the County Hurdle. Cheltenham form is the gold standard qualification and horses who have experience of the course under Festival conditions are always worth considering.
In a sprint handicap like the County Hurdle, the weight carried can be decisive over the final climb up the Cheltenham hill. Horses carrying under 10st 7lb who are clearly well-handicapped for their recent form are ideal candidates, especially if they are lightly raced and progressive.
With 20+ runners and typically five places paid, the County Hurdle is an outstanding each-way betting race. Horses at 16/1–25/1 who have the right profile represent exceptional each-way value, as the place terms at these odds can be highly profitable even if the horse finishes second, third or fourth.
