Bookies Braced For £500 Million Festival Frenzy
*But Will Punters Have The Last Laugh?

Britain’s bookmakers are preparing for the biggest betting week of the year, as the Cheltenham Festival takes centre stage from Tuesday, a meeting that could see more than £300 million gambled on it, boosting industry-wide turnover across the week to a recession-busting £500 million in total.

However, despite the welcome increase in business, bookies fear a host of well-fancied favourites will oblige at Prestbury Park, a scenario that would cost the layers a fortune. Reigning big race champions Hurricane Fly (Champion Hurdle), Sizing Europe (Champion Chase), Big Buck’s (World Hurdle) and Long Run (Gold Cup) are all hot favourites for their respective races, while other runners likely to be well-backed include Sprinter Sacre (Arkle), Quevega (Mares Hurdle), Simonsig (Neptune Novices’), Boston Bob (Albert Bartlett), and Grand Crus (RSA Chase).

“The Cheltenham Festival is one of the most important meetings of the year as far as we’re concerned, and certainly one of the busiest, with over £300 million likely to be wagered on the 27 races across the UK betting industry. The popularity of this meeting is also likely to have a positive knock-on effect on the rest of our business, which could feasibly see total turnover over the next week reach £500 million, proving how resilient gambling is as a leisure pursuit,” explained Coral’s David Stevens.

“On the downside, we can’t remember a Festival where so many fancied horses were in action, especially in the big championship races, and these reigning champions, along with the likes of Quevega and Sprinter Sacre, will be written on thousands of betting slips next week. Wins for all these hot favourites would ensure bookmakers endured their most painful payout since Frankie Dettori went through the card at Ascot 16 years ago, a day that saw £40 million returned to punters,” said Stevens.

The opening day treble of hot favourites Sprinter Sacre, Hurricane Fly and Quevega currently pays over 3-1 with Coral, while repeat wins for Hurricane Fly, Sizing Europe, Big Buck’s and Long Run is on offer at over 12-1.

“It’s fair to say we are approaching this year’s Festival with more than a little trepidation, as the age-old battle between bookie and punter is likely to rage fiercely over the next four days, hopefully we’ll still be standing at the end of it!” added Stevens.

Sizing Europe is the 10-11 favourite with Coral for a repeat win in the Queen Mother Champion Chase, following the latest entry stage for the races on day two of next week’s Cheltenham Festival.

Grand Crus is 6-4 favourite for the RSA Chase, although David Pipe’s charge does also have the option of the Gold Cup, while the well-backed Vendor is 3-1 (from 7-2) favourite for the Fred Winter.

“Sizing Europe is likely to be the first name on thousands of betting slips next Wednesday, while Grand Crus, Simonsig and Vendor are other horses likely to be popular if they run on day two of the Festival,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

“However the National Hunt Chase, Bumper and our own Coral Cup look far harder to solve, so we’ll be hoping at least some results go the layers’ way,” added Stevens.

Kauto Star Looking Good for Cheltenham Festival

A few days ago it was announced that Superstar horse Kauto Star had suffered a fall and may not race at the Cheltenham Festival. news today has shown significant progress and he is still a possibility to race at the 2012 Cheltenham Festival. Horse trainer Paul Nicholls took Kauto Star for a 10 furlong canter with Big Bucks up a hill and seemed to be progressing well. Currently Kauto Star‘s odds are at 4/1 odds whereas before the surprise announcement of the injury the odds were at 7/2. Long Run‘s odds have skyrocketed to an obscene 15/8 odds.

It looks pretty clear that the expected winner as of right now is Long Run but if Kauto Star can pull of a big surprise comeback that would make it one of the most legendary stories at the Cheltenham Festival to date. Everyone is holding out hope he will be able to race on Gold Cup Day.

Bookies Fear First Day Treble As Final Fields Take Shape

The make-up for the races on the opening day of next week’s Cheltenham Festival took a step nearer completion following the latest entry stage today. Among the hot favourites in action on Tuesday are Sprinter Sacre, 4-6 for the Racing Post Arkle, Hurricane Fly, 8-11 for a repeat win in the Champion Hurdle, and Quevega, shortest of all at 1-2 for a fourth win in the David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle.

“The fate of these three runners will set the tone for the entire week, if they all win punters will be on the front foot and look to inflict further pain on the layers with the the likes of Sizing Europe and Big Buck’s,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

“However, if the first day treble is scuppered, we will fancy taking on the other supposed good things in the week, but either way, it promises to be an exciting start to the biggest betting week of the racing year,” added Stevens.

Kauto Star Latest Gives Gold Cup Hope to Backers

The latest reports from trainer Paul Nicholls suggest that Kauto Star, the 4-1 second favourite with Coral for the Gold Cup, is recovering well from the schooling fall he suffered recently. Long Run is 6-4 favourite for the Gold Cup, with Grand Crus 6-1, and Burton Port 7-1.

“The latest report from Ditcheat suggests that Kauto Star’s Gold Cup preparations are getting back on track, and we certainly hope that is the case, not because we will refund ante-post bets if he doesn’t line up, but because Long Run v Kauto Star would really capture punters’ imagination a week on Friday,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

Looking ahead to next month’s John Smith’s Grand National, last year’s winner, Ballabriggs, remains 16-1 for back-to-back wins, following his fourth place at Kelso on Saturday, while Junior is the 10-1 (from 12-1) second favourite with Coral after his narrow defeat at Donacaster.

“Junior lost very little in defeat and remains on track to become the first horse to win at Royal Ascot, the Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National, while Ballabriggs will also head to Aintree as one of the market leaders after his comeback fourth at Kelso,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

*Coral are Non Runner No Bet on All Cheltenham Races, and will refund ante-post bets on Kauto Star if he does not run.

Peddlers Cross Backed Again for Jewson

Coral has trimmed Peddlers Cross to 3-1 favourite (from 7-2) for the Jewson Novices’ Chase, after Donald McCain’s charge was the subject of further support for the longer of his two Festival options today. The seven-year-old is also 3-1 for the Racing Post Arkle, but behind the odds-on favourite, Sprinter Sacre, 10-11.

“From being the one-time Racing Post Arkle favourite, Peddlers Cross is now by no means certain to line up in the race, with all the recent support suggesting the Jewson could be his target,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

NICHOLLS GREY AL FEROF BACKED FOR ARKLE SUCCESS

Coral bookmakers have seen plenty of money for Paul Nicholls’ Al Ferof to win the Arkle Trophy on the first day and have cut the price of the popular grey to 4-1 (from 11-2).

Other movers on the day have seen Darlan (6-1 from 7-1) and Galileo’s Choice (13-2 from 8-1) backed in the first race of the Festival, the Supreme Novice. The Package, backed into 8-1 (from 12-1) to win the JTL Speciality Chase and Boston Bay (3-1 from 9-2) in the Albert Bartlett.

Coral have also seen money for Alan King to be named the top trainer and have trimmed his price to 14-1 (from 20-1)

Kauto Star Might Not Race

Kauto Star may not race due to a tremendous fall says trainer Nicky Henderson. It turns out the injury was more serious then initially thought and now the superstar race horse may not race afterall. The initial incident happened last Friday February 24th and is unfortunate news wasn’t released sooner to the public. The odds will most definitely be changed and a victory for Long Run has been made even more abundantly possible.

Cheltenham Waters Race Horse Course

Cheltenham officials have already started to water the race course in preparation for the 2012 Cheltenham festival slated to begin March 13th. The weather forecast over the next couple weeks is to remain fairly dry throughout and the keep the ground fairly soft. In February Cheltenham only saw a tiny amount of 3mm of rain in which the same time last year Cheltenham saw 40mm.

It is expected to rain 12 to 15 mm in the next few days but that will hardly amount to anything once the dry weather hits. Cheltenham race horse course officials will be monitoring the situation very tightly and add more water when needed. The Cheltenham Festival starts March 13th, 2012 and goes for four days and ends on Friday March 16th.
